ABSTRACT

SUMMARY: Malocclusion is usually treated based on clinical decisions complemented with a cephalometric analysis, allowing the comparison of an individual with standard reference norms. Cephalometric standards have mostly been obtained from Caucasian population, but may not be appropriate for other ethnic groups, becoming a clinically relevant problem in multicultural and multiracial societies. The present study aimed to establish cephalometric norms for Chilean-Latino population, using a representative sample of class I individuals in permanent dentition. A sample of 72 cephalometric x-rays of class I growing individuals (47 women and 25 men) between 10 and 20 years of age with class I occlusion and harmonic profile was obtained from the records of the Universidad de los Andes taken between 2012 and 2019, including 1164 individuals. The radiographs were classified according to their cervical vertebral maturation status, and cephalometrically analyzed, obtaining vertical and sagittal parameters in soft and hard tissues, which were compared with Caucasian cephalometric norms. The statistical analysis was performed using descriptive and inferential statistics (T-test, ANOVA and Bonferroni tests). Cephalometric norms were obtained for hard and soft tissues. Upon comparison with Caucasian norms, the subjects included in the sample present a tendency towards a convex profile, significant incisal proclination, dental protrusion, labial biprotrusion and an acute nasolabial angle. There are cephalometric differences between the Caucasian cephalometric norms and those observed Chilean Latino population, displaying differences at a hard and soft tissue level that should be taken into account for clinical decision making in Orthodontics.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to list the main periapical lesions that do not originate from pulpal necrosis. An integrative literature review was carried out, with a search in the Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrievel System Online (MEDLINE) and Bibliografia Brasileira de Odontologia (BBO) databases. The keywords used were "periapical diseases" and "differential diagnosis", combined with the boolean operator "AND". 42 articles were found that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The analysis of the included studies showed that the main periapical lesions of non-endodontic origin are the odontogenic keratocyst and the ameloblastoma. Although the prevalence of non-endodontic periapical lesions is low, it is important to be aware of possible differential diagnoses, since the lesions that most appeared in the literature are locally aggressive and potentially mutilating pathologies. In addition, the conduct of the professional who is faced with any type of periapical lesion that presents behavior outside the normal range should be to perform a biopsy and histopathological analysis.

ABSTRACT

Objective:To compare the accuracy of the needle tip reaching the target tissue between two subcutaneous injection techniques under ultrasound imaging in order to provide a basis for clinical injection to make a safe and reasonable decision. Methods:This was a parallel controlled non-inferiority comparative study. A total of 68 patients who received subcutaneous injections in the outpatient injection room of Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing University from June 2021 to September 2022 were selected as the research subjects, and they were divided intothe A and B group according to the random number table method, there were 34 cases in each group. Group A received pinched skin injections, and group B received taut skin injections. Unify the injection site, injection needle length, and needle insertion angle. The accuracy rate of the needle tip reaching the target tissue, namely the subcutaneous fat layer, was compared between the two groups by ultrasound imaging, and the pain scores and the imaging performance during the injection process were observed. Results:The accuracy of the needle tip reaching the subcutaneous fat layer in the group A was 97.1%(33/34), which compared with the 100.0%(34/34) in the group B, there was no significant difference ( χ2 = 0.53, P>0.05). There was no significant difference about the distribution of pain scores between the two groups ( χ2 = 0.67, P>0.05). There were no significant differences about age, subcutaneous fat thickness and the distance from the needle tip to the myofascial in patients with different pain scores ( F = 1.20, 0.44, H = 0.64, all P>0.05). Conclusions:Under certain conditions, pinching the skin and tightening the skin have the same accuracy and safety when the needle tip reaches the subcutaneous fat layer of the target tissue, and the choice should be made according to the clinical situation. Imaging observations have enlightening significance for the practice of subcutaneous injection.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveUltra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-electrostatic field orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometry(UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS) was used to identify the metabolites of limonin in rats, and to explore the gender differences in the distribution of prototype components and metabolites in rats after single dose intragastric administration of limonin, as well as to speculate the metabolic pathways. MethodThe separation was performed on a Thermo Scientific Accucore™ C18 column(3 mm×100 mm, 2.6 μm) with 0.1% formic acid aqueous solution(A)-0.1% formic acid acetonitrile solution(B) as mobile phase in a gradient elution mode(0-1 min, 5%B; 1-6 min, 5%-20%B; 6-18 min, 20%-50%B; 18-23 min, 50%-80%B; 23-25 min, 80%-95%B; 25-30 min, 95%B) at a flow rate of 0.3 mL·min-1 and a column temperature of 30 ℃. MS data of biological samples were collected under the positive ion mode of electrospray ionization(ESI) and in the scanning range of m/z 100-1 500. Plasma, tissues(heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney, stomach and small intestine), urine and fecal samples were collected and prepared after intragastric administration, and the prototype component and metabolites of limonin were identified. ResultThe prototype component of limonin were detected in the feces, stomach, small intestine of female and male rats, and in the heart, liver, spleen, lung and kidney tissues of female rats. A total of 23 metabolites related to limonin were detected in rats, of which 2, 1, 5, 4, 23 metabolites were detected in liver, stomach, small intestine, urine and feces, respectively, and the main metabolic pathways were hydrolysis, reduction, hydroxylation and methylation, etc. The distribution of some metabolites differed between male and female rats. ConclusionThe prototype component of limonin are mainly distributed in the stomach and small intestine in rats, and the distribution of prototype component and some metabolites are different by gender. Limonin is mainly excreted through feces with phase Ⅰ metabolites as the main ones. The results of this study can provide a reference for further elucidation of the effect of gender differences on the metabolism of limonin in vivo and its mechanism of action.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective: This study aimed to evaluate neuronal markers in stromal cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) and standardize the isolation and characterization of those cells. Methodology: Healthy primary teeth were collected from children. The cells were isolated by enzymatic digestion with collagenase. By following the International Society for Cell and Gene Therapy (ISCT) guidelines, SHED were characterized by flow cytometry and differentiated into osteogenic, adipogenic, and chondrogenic lineages. Colony-forming unit-fibroblasts (CFU-F) were performed to assess these cells' potential and efficiency. To clarify the neuronal potential of SHED, the expression of nestin and βIII-tubulin were examined by immunofluorescence and SOX1, SOX2, GFAP, and doublecortin (DCX), nestin, CD56, and CD146 by flow cytometry. Results: SHED showed mesenchymal stromal cells characteristics, such as adhesion to plastic, positive immunophenotypic profile for CD29, CD44, CD73, CD90, CD105, and CD166 markers, reduced expression for CD14, CD19, CD34, CD45, HLA-DR, and differentiation in three lineages confirmed by staining and gene expression for adipogenic differentiation. The average efficiency of colony formation was 16.69%. SHED expressed the neuronal markers nestin and βIII-tubulin; the fluorescent signal intensity was significantly higher in βIII-tubulin (p<0.0001) compared to nestin. Moreover, SHED expressed DCX, GFAP, nestin, SOX1, SOX2, CD56, CD146, and CD271. Therefore, SHED had a potential for neuronal lineage even without induction with culture medium and specific factors. Conclusion: SHEDs may be a new therapeutic strategy for regenerating and repairing neuronal cells and tissues.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the influence of different dental tissue thickness on the measurement of oxygen saturation (SpO2) levels in high (HP) and low (LP) blood perfusion by comparing the values obtained from two different pulse oximeters (POs) - BCI and Sense 10. Thirty freshly extracted human teeth had their crowns interposed between the POs and an optical simulator, which emulated the SpO2 and heart beats per minute (bpm) at HP (100% SpO2/75 bpm) and LP (86% SpO2/75 bpm) modes. Afterwards, the palatine/lingual surfaces of the dental crowns were worn with diamond drills. The reading of SpO2 was performed again using the POs alternately through the buccal surface of each dental crown. Data were analyzed by the Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney and Kendall Tau-b tests (α=5%). The results showed significant difference at the HP and LP modes in the SpO2 readouts through the different dental thicknesses with the use of BCI, and at the LP mode with the use of Sense 10, which had a significant linear correlation (p<0.0001) and lower SpO2 readout values in relation to the increase of the dental thickness. Irrespective of tooth thickness, Sense 10 had significantly higher readout values (p<0.0001) than BCI at both perfusion modes. The interposition of different thicknesses of enamel and dentin influenced the POs measurement of SpO2, specially at the low perfusion mode. The POs were more accurate in SpO2 measurement when simulated perfusion levels were higher.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study dynamic compression performance of adipose tissues, so as to further reveal the damage mechanism, and provide references for medical treatment. Methods Based on the improved split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) experimental device, the adipose tissue dynamic compression experiment was conducted. The stress-strain curves of adipose tissues at different strain rates were obtained. Then the numerical model of SHPB was established, and the experimental process was simulated and analyzed. The numerical simulation for penetration process of 32 mm diameter rubber non-lethal projectile into the simulated target in human abdomen was carried out. Results Adipose tissues had a noticeable strain rate effect. The stress-strain curves at two high strain rates were approximately straight lines. The slope was similar, and the elastic modulus was 3.25 MPa, which was about 6 times of that under a quasi-static state. The simulation curves of fat SHPB were consistent with the experimental curves, which verified correctness of the constitutive model. In the process of non-lethal projectile penetrating human abdomen, an annular convex area similar to water wave appeared on skin surface, and the fat layer absorbed about 67% of the impact kinetic energy. Conclusions The experimental data of adipose tissues are very accurate. Numerical simulation can reproduce the penetration process well, and provide references for studying the damaging effect of non-lethal weapons on human body.

ABSTRACT

@#As a highly conserved signal pathway in evolution, the WNT signaling pathway plays an essential role in periodontium growth, development and injury repair. The Axin-associated protein Axin2 is a direct effector molecule of the WNT signaling pathway and labels WNT-responsive cells well. Studies have shown that Axin2-positive (Axin2+) cells in the periodontium have the potential for self-renewal, replication and multidirectional differentiation. This article reviews the temporal and spatial distribution of Axin2+ cells in periodontal tissue development and the role and regulatory mechanism of Axin2+ cells in periodontal tissue development, regeneration and tissue remodeling to provide new ideas for periodontal tissue regeneration. The literature review showed that Axin2+ cells were the main cell source of periodontium development, and Axin2+ cells played essential roles in tooth extraction socket healing, implant osseointegration, periodontal tissue remodeling and junctional epithelium regeneration. The function of Axin2+ cells was positively regulated by the canonical WNT signaling pathway. However, the regulatory mechanisms of other signaling pathways on Axin2+ cells remain to be elucidated.

Exposure to hypoxia is considered a stressful stimulus, therefore the organism develops acclimation mechanisms to try to ensure homeostasis. Although the effect of hypoxia on different tissues and organs has been very well documented, the role of low levels of O2 in the oral cavity has not received the same analysis. In this review, we analyzed the available bibliographic data concerning the effects of hypoxia on periodontal tissue, salivary glands, and dental pulp. The published evidence demonstrates that low O2 levels increase the number of inflammatory mediators that induce the progression of periodontal disease, and, in turn, the inflammation established during the progression of periodontitis aggravates tissue hypoxia conditions. Salivary glands are also affected during hypoxic exposure, decreasing salivary secretion, and leading to ultrastructural alterations in the glandular parenchyma. On the other hand, hypoxia could also be beneficial in some scenarios. It has been established that dental pulp cells grow better in culture under hypoxic conditions than they do in normoxia. Furthermore, mild hypoxia seems to stimulate periodontal ligament cells proliferation and matrix degradation, key events during for orthodontic treatments. In conclusion, to determine the effects of hypoxia in the oral cavity, it is necessary to analyze not only the type of tissue involved but also the hypoxic conditions to which it is subjected, as well as its duration and modality (AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective to analyze the organ and tissue donation advertising campaigns as biopolitical strategies. Method a qualitative research study inspired on the Post-Structuralist strand of Cultural Studies. Data collection took place between July and September 2020 and the research corpus consisted in the visual and textual components of 421 organ and tissue donation advertising pieces from institutional websites of the Ministry of Health, State Health Secretariats, State Transplantation Centers and the Brazilian Association of Organ Transplantation. The data were managed using the Ethnograph v6 program, submitted to analysis as proposed by Janice Morse and discussed following Michel Foucault's theoretical notions of Biopower and Biopolitics. Results two categories are presented. In the first, the representation of cultural and age diversity in the campaigns was discussed as a way to include all people in the donation and transplantation process; in the second, the use of heroism, altruism and empathy to mobilize the donor's "I" was addressed. Conclusion the inclusion of cultural and age diversity and the use of characteristics such as empathy, altruism and heroism in advertising campaigns are biopolitical strategies used by the Brazilian State to drive the population towards organ donation.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Heavy metal pollution in aquatic ecosystems in the area is one of the most severe problems that compromise food security at the local, regional and global levels. In this study, the specific problem of the bioconcentration of mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and Zinc (Zn) in 2 of the higher nutritional importance fish species (Ariopsis felis and Diplodus annularis) for the riverside inhabitants of the Ranchería river, in northern Colombia, is addressed. The organic tissue samples were subjected to acid digestion (HNO3 and HClO4 in a 3:1 ratio), and the quantification of metals was carried out by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Additionally, the levels of metals in the sediment were measured, in order to determine environmental quality indices. This allow to determine that heavy metals do not present a risk to the aquatic organisms that inhabit this area. Different heavy metal concentration values were found: in decreasing order, Zn> Hg> Pb in sediment, and Hg> Zn> Pb in biological tissue. The results reveal that the concentrations of heavy metals present in fish tissue and sediment show a positive correlation, and a statistically significant linear regression (p = 0,001, p < 0,05). The presence of heavy metals in river sediment and bioconcentrates in fish could derive from point and diffuse sources related to agricultural, livestock, mining and wastewater activities.
